Tbh I'm more fixated on the fact of how much his parents are failing luan ever since. I get that you have to live through life on your own and see things for yourself but the thing with his parents is that they are completely neglectful but act involved in his life. Does that make sense? They let him be but still force a path on him. It kinda feels like that image about the illusion of free choice where both left and right choices lead to only one ending. They never sat down with him and acknowledged his sincerity even when he was young. If anything, Hedrick was his father. He let him be but was looking out for him and made him understand the consequences of his choices which is why he was able to convince Luan to study abroad, no?
