Until the XIXe in Europe (I don't know for sure elsewhere), children were considered unfinished adult. Most noble parents didn't even bother raising them and poor people had them because no contraception and needed help with work.

Yes unfortunately most children would die after birth because of illness (vaccine made that disappear) or lack of proper care. If I remember correctly people would wait to be sure the baby would live before naming them. If they don't have a name, mother would not be as attached to their children and would be able to move on faster. It was really an other mindset and way of life. But they didn't have much choice, most people were poor and uneducated. I'm not saying parents didn't care, it was just harder for everyone.

In college, while studying psychology, we had a teacher who's specialty was children. She gave us a history of how children where treated and how society was seeing them + I took a linguistic class and we were talking about "mother" "father" and names and how it was for them for Indo-European to today's french (I live in France btw so I don't really know if in Asia or Africa it was different but these webtoons are taking place in fake European society lol)
I love learning so I took a lot of optional classes lol

I think it’s also sad that at a young age yoi got exposed to such graphic content. 12 is too young to know what BL is. I think we had way too much access to things like this. I was so into fanfics too but I was in senior school when I got exposed to smut.
