I'm flabbergasted that so many people here think that his reaction was reasonable or that she deserved a slap in the face so let me tell you that's not okay. Violence both psychological and psychical is wrong (also no matter what gender victim/abuser is). Being angry doesn't equal being aggressive, you can be angry and don't resolve to violence. Also he wasn't really mad at her because of money or love, but because she hurt his pride as a man and that's a misogyny flowing out of him.
