They were being controlled. Everyone is indoctrined to act a certain way because they are in a novel. They all have specific roles. Since the FL broke out of the "mind control" and started to act differently than how she was programed to, other people started to break free as well, including Antes' parents.
I still can't forgive Vincent's parents for abandoning a literal child after rumors got out of hand.
