I read few comments and the way I comprehended the situation was a bit different.
The duke goes back and saves Alois (who is a kid).
As Alois grows up the Duke as shown with his present self thinks that Alois could meet other people and grow up differently and love someone else.
The Duke although in love with Alois feels that Alois would change (as the 20yr Duke who met Alois doesn't know what has happen for Alois to love him that much). And the duke doesn't accept Alois.
And the story happens again, Alois is saddened by the fact that the Duke is meeting a woman and goes and cries.
Plus in the end where it showed that they are searching for Alois in the forest, it's the Duke who finds Alois and not others who were searching for him. Then the duke realises nothing has changed. His past self found Alois there with his younger self so he goes there and the same thing repeats.
Does anyone else gets this?
