From what I remember, I think it sort of stemmed from Hotaru’s childhood friend and Saki’s possessive feelings over Hotaru. I think it was also around the time when he found out that his older friend was Hotaru’s grandpa. He felt extremely guilty and conflicted about his feelings over Hotaru. When Hotaru felt like everything was fine, he felt like he was changing who she was and didn’t want that for someone he truly loved (which was so much growth on his part from when he only thought about his feelings and what he wanted). Hopefully that answers your question! :)
Also to clarify, Hotaru was willing to change to meet Saki’s needs and wants, and he noticed that and then went into a dark spiral. But then he left before Hotaru could explain her feelings Σ(っ°Д °;)っ
