I understand why everyone is bothered by the lack of communication in the second season, but not all of us act or think the same when we're in a relationship. The author explains in depth what each one thinks; it's not that it stays superficial, but rather wants us to understand how each of them thinks and why they act that way. They are both very different; they think differently but are still capable of overcoming obstacles and realizing that what they want most is to be with each other. For me, it shows us a real relationship, where many times the problems come from being, thinking, or acting differently, but that's the beautiful thing about being human, embracing and understanding those differences to decide to be together. Besides, they are still 21 years old. Each one is learning how to love, how to communicate... Or do you feel like you know everything at 21?
