I think if it is AI, it's the backgrounds, not the characters. But I went back to look at the background, and most of the details are all in order, excluding maybe one or two columns in the big rooms. But even those just look like they are too far from the first plan so the artist was like "good enough"

Ai even back then would have made these images even more fucked up lmao, makes me kind of sad and baffled people think this is ai when it is genuinely not. If u are also curious go check out the artists instagram, its somewhere amongst these comments.
Their art and character designs are very consistent even if if the proportions may be a little off or wonky, but its REALISTICALLY so. Realistically so in the way that you can see that a human drew this.
This artist uses 3D assets as many of us artists and other comic artists do, so perhaps that could be adding to why you feel something is off, but trust, as an artist that despises ai images, this is far from ai, nor even ai assisted
In one of the scenes his dress kinda fuses with the background, i really hoped this wasn't ai but kinda seem like it might be.
