I think the MC knew he was improving oddly rapidly, but what he now realized is that the ML was always fluent. Thus, he only set up the german lessons to get a chance to fuk the MC. Essentially, making the MC feel like he's blindly selling himself. With that said though, yeah ML dumb, especially when he doubled down on the lie.
