I feel like with male protagonist people expect the.topuc to be taken seriously and for there to be a high chance the male lead escapes the toxic female lead or defeats her or become equals in a way that doesn't seem wrong but when it comes to female protagonists it seems that a lot of people cannot handle such a concept.
No wonder psychological thrillers, mysteries, horrors etc manhwa usually have male protagonists and female toxic, abusive, scary female leads or a male lead (except for yaoi of course) and when the roles are reverse it is a romance for a female audience. I know this would have more positive reviews if it ended up like a typical toxic romance with a female protagonist.
