I don’t think it was that out of the blue if you remember he has been taking care of cheese because he associated him with mc (although he forgot MC’s face but he still had the association with the cat)
so when he realized that MC was the one who gave him food it sort of clicked for him.
Also he realized Cheese wasn’t a stray and that something he had been taking care of for so long actually belonged to someone else. He didn’t want the same to happen with MC, and didn’t want MC to date or “belong” to someone else.
