Actually at this point in the story, he rather give up than force the situation with Nanjo, he is actually evolving, he rather hurt himself than Nanjo. Do we want for him to change and get better or do we want him to stay the same so we can keep hating him!?

My standards are where the story starts then i see how the character might improve or not and im glad MC is.

Just cause it was an imagination doesn't make this any less horrible.
The fact he can imagine hurting the person he loves rather than communicating his feelings speaks volume. He would much rather lock and Nanjo rather than tell him he loves him
