There existed a class system in East and South Asia. People were divided into Priest, Royals, Merchants, Servants etc. So people below Merchants did or pursue livelihood that denoted their mark in society. For eg: a fisherman, pottery makers, charioters had their surnames dedicating to their names. It's like the Smiths, watchman, baker etc Priest, Royals and Merchants were considered nobles and others who fell below them were considered untouchables. So these kids including this girl were raised by their parents teaching about class system, that lower class cannot have the same rights as nobles and lower class were untouchables. This existed across Korea,China,India and Japan. Most people are only aware about this happening in India but my friend Don't forget the fact that culture were spreading from India to China then China to Japan and Korea. India is a close neighbor to China.
