He was born with both genitals, referred to as intersex. It's possible in real life depending on the which reproductive organs/ hormones they have. Some people can get pregnant naturally while others may need to seek fertility treatments. But I'm guessing his external genitals resemble more male, for now we'll just suspend our disbelief for the sake of the story.
