fr i was thinking the same. maybe thats kinda what the uncle meant tho? saying he shouldve been more rational and helped out anyways.
He himself has stated several times that he SHOULDN'T hate her, cause she's just a kid but because of trauma and hatred of what he believes is her mother it gets in the way and he acknowledges that.
It’s kinda sad that they only feel regret when she’s the red hairs daughter, I guess if she was the empresses actual daughter it would justify the abuse
