A story can have multiple genres tho... idk why people are saying it's not a bl when yoshiki clearly has feelings for hikaru, and "hikaru" confessed to him. This story can be a psychological horror and also a bl. Whether or not they get together there's still a romantic buildup of tension between the male charaters as they open up and get closer to eachother. I don't know why people need the charaters shouting "I'M GAY" to understand that they are. Also a big part of the story is that because of this small towns beliefs "being gay = sick" that's why yoshiki or even yoshiki's dad never confessed or came out to the people they had romantic feelings about.
People saying its not a bl arent saying the characters arent gay!! Bl stories are categorized that way because they focus on the love story, the main plot centers around the romance. The summer hikaru died is not about romance, it's a horror story that happens to include queer characters and relationships. The author themselves have come out to say they don't consider their story as a bl and will not give it a romance/bl tag because of this, openly saying that stories with queer characters don't need to focus on queerness. So while yes, the characters do have romantic feelings for each other thats why the series isn't considered a romance/bl
One of our main charaters have confessed! It's focused on these two charaters that have building tension and are romantically getting closer to eachother! How is that not romance. Also A STORY CAN BE MORE THAN 1 GENRE!! Whether the author wants to back track or not this was literally a bl horror manga... I hate how people that made bl want to distance themselves from the genre once there story's start to get popular... Just because you have a horror story doesn't mean it can't have other genres like romance(bl).
Also yoshiki being gay (liking hikaru) is a big part of the story. Without him being gay and having deep feelings for hikaru lot of the story would fall flat. The story would literally be completely different if that wasn't a big focus of the story. Saying stories don't need to focus on queerness while having a queer focused story is a little weird.

Sorry I hit send too early!! I dont find it weird because all it means/what im guessing the author meant by it is that basically every story with queer characters is a romance. But not every story with queer characters needs to have them being queer the main focus of the story. They can just be characters like any cishet character can. The author has stated they wanted to write a horror story that has queer characters in it, the story itself is about them growing up and being queer is just one part of the larger cogwheel starting to turn as they become older and start to navigate this strange world they've been made aware of. The story isnt a bl in the traditional sense where them being queer is the overall main point of the story, it's just one smaller subplot moving along with everything else.
There's a lot of bl that aren't "traditional bl" meaning they have other genres in it but unlike this author and some of the fans they still call it a bl... Again i'm saying it can have multiple genres even for the smaller but still main themes of the story. Idk why bl makers and some readers are acting like bl is derogatory.. it actually hurts the making (and reputation) of more unique multi genre bls (which the summer hikaru died is). And again one of the main focuses of this story is are main charater(s) being queer. Also, are you saying that bl charaters aren't regular charaters like in any other story... it's not the genres fault people like you and this author think of them that way. Writing a story that has gay charaters that have romantic tension and it's an important part of the story makes it a gay romance(bl) with the other themes it has in it like horror...
