That’s a really interesting question. Tbh I think the story is an allegory for religion and where it “leads us” (u can check my profile if u want but my theories are kinda long). Basically, I think fallen sheep is about how desperate we are to find purpose in anything (a person, religion etc), and even when we follow them we can end up “lost” and lose everything in the process (identity, our lives even..) given the fact that religion and this concept of devotion is so prevalent and widely accepted in our society, especially in our history, it seems the owner doesn’t care that the sheep are in potential danger. Sheep are the symbol of sacrifice—we take care of them sure, but they’re ultimately used to prove loyalty in this story, in the Bible. There’s a status quo in what everyone in this story is doing—Dennis following, Todd leading, and the owner of the farm sitting by passively letting it all happen. Some people follow and lead, while others do nothing at all. Maybe he accepts the fact that a couple sheep are bound to die, that things are meant to be this way and change is inconvenient. To uphold systems that don’t quite align with our best interest because it’s easier to change the entire thing itself is basically what I’m getting at
Dennis' dead. Okay, got that. Todd's probably a shapeshifter. Yeah, sure. I accept.
But what I don't get is why the owner still lets his sheep graze there, even though he knows it's dangerous. From the way he reacted, it seems like this kind of thing has happened more than once.
If it weren't for this job, Dennis could've found something else. He wouldn't have met Todd, he wouldn't have gotten so obsessed with him. And most of all - he wouldn't have died! Yes, I lied. I can't accept his death! Just whyyy
