I'm guessing something like a pandora box, he opened something he shouldn't have , and accidentally free the mutations, or the source of the mutations, like a patient 0 who should stay confined to avoid contamination to other, or a product that shouldn't be opened , either way , his curiosity accidentally started it
And maybe that's why his parents kept him isolated and everything, not knowing if , or when it would manifest since he was so close to the source, i can see something like that, and since he still don't have sign of mutation, i can see something like him being the antidote as well ...
