I'm pretty sure he knows and see the signs from the start. Honestly the whole world building is about his perspective getting filtered towards ml. Thing is he kept wanting to believe otherwise, it was clearly hinted he refuse the doubt because he knows if he doubt ml it's going to hurt him but ig finally he can't run away from truth
Mc is not dumb, he is lonely and empty. Mc is just ignoring all the signs to feel that even someone like him can be loved and treasured. He is deluding himself to believe in all of ml's lies but alas the harsh truth can't be hidden or ignored forever.
