It's a very fitting concept too, it's got this natural law aspect to it (survival of the fittest) which fits into a world where fantasy monsters are a normal part of wild life.

finally, a concept of mate that is interesting by its dynamic and not "the fates intended it that way, you had no choice or say in the matter" (that's the opposite of a romantic situation)
