Okii I'm gonna say something crazy but the devour beast is his father somehow ! I said what I said idk how but I have a feeling. We didn't see maru eating the devour beast in his memories directly but we saw his father getting killed by that beast, maybe then his father got the powers and the beast took control of the father but he somehow fight that and with his last peace of consciousness made maru eat him to get the power from the father who by now turned one with the beast so that's why the beast was hugging maru like that and helping him
