I respectfully disagree. For example during conflicts of countries, small countries, unless they have backup from a powerful country, most small countries choose to remain neutral or in position of aid such as Venice and Singapore. In this case, the fifth prince didn't choose to protect her family, he chose to only protect her. The empress is a double-edged sword, she could have been one of those who gets rid of the hunting dog once the battle is over but we know she won't win. Also, there might be an obvious winner but no winner doesn't suffer losses. She simply didn't want to be involved in the conflict that she was unfortunately dragged into by the fifth prince unwillingly.
Personally I think it's the author's flaw also because it was very hard to determine whether Vesta was important throughout the story despite having the sacred shield and sword. They are not politically influential and there was little establishment as to whether they had a substantial military force to influence the political scene so I was confused tbh

I would agree, but only up until the queen thoroughly threatened her for the last time That was when it became a foolish farce. Whether or not she joined publicly. The Queen could falsely accuse and exterminate them. It's because they are not especially strong or influential that they are easy to dispose of, but they have just enough importance to be useful or a weapon. That is not to say I would choose any better. I wouldn't say it's bad writing either. It wasn't out of character for Vesta, and she had her reasons. I only disagreed with her decision after the marriage proposal from the queen.
She's dumb for not picking a side in an inevitable war with an obvious winner, and a target on her back with everything to lose. BUT she isn't dumb for choosing her family over a man. Cuz chat never gets mad about that, and I really think yall should
