I'm guessing proximity to his imprinted guide just makes him fall faster. Until recently, he had been avoiding him the entire time.
Also it isn't sudden. We have gone through chapters of the top being shitty and throwing up to being a little less disgusted each time.
He's a selfish asshole that really only thinks of himself. He felt how good the guiding is, so he adjusted.
