How was it a nightmare relationship? It seems to me that Kuji doesn't want to blatantly confess to Azuma that he wants to be in a serious relationship. Coz Azuma doesn't feel that way yet and he was still figuring out his feelings before the latest chapter. He didn't want to scare Azuma away.
At least they didn't have a 3rd party or didn't sleep with someone else in the past 2 years of their situationship. They just didn't want to make things official coz Azuma hasn't confirmed his true feelings til now.
