At least the adopted mother is aware that keeping the promise to leave Elodie alone was a mistake. Although she couldn't really care about Elodie since her husband forbid it, she still went to her when Elodie was seriously sick. In her own way she tried to be present in Elodie's life but she quickly realized that the child is scared of her so she stopped. Did she try hard enough? Of course not, but unlike the adopted father she acknowledged that they made Elodie miserable and made the wrong choices. On the other hand her husband pretends nothing is wrong and has no reflection about his neglect.
