Okay, the way I phrased it downplays his actions, I admit that. But for the second part, this is the BEGINNING of his redemption arc. It's because the author set him up to be too unlikeable. A redemption a little too late. The readers are pissed because they know whatever "redemption" he will have won't be worth it.
