Dramatic or realistic, It's not really that rare for couples (or even friends) to separate when there is geographical distance between them. I think once they had made up their minds, Trevor couldn't hold him back to their past and Gene tried to not look back too. I think the fact that Gene was planning to go to NY even before Gene-nephew's letter proves he still cared for the Trevor he remembered. My thoughts tho

But why did they have to be separated for 16 years?!!!!!!!
I mean, as the young gene has said they could’ve kept in contact sending letters to each other or calling and meeting on Christmas or any other holiday He traveled to study not to war!!! 16 years that’s a long time the author wanted to be dramatic. I prefer if he was dead because through the chapters I started to believe that he passed away in an accident or something or he went back to his family that would be better than he traveled to study Come on!! the number of years that they’ve been separate piss me off
