well, he likes penelope in a romantic way. he's all over the place or acting weird coz he was brainwashed by leila but even before the brainwashing i can say that he's acting weird all the time. he likes penelope not as a sister but as something else, and he was probably refusing to acknowledge that hence why his actions and words differ from time to time. I've read the novel long time ago and it has bad translations so i cam only understand it like this TT
