I think it's more of an artistic choice than a story tool, cuz no one really mentions the ferret moving or anything unless Hugh is the only one who can see it like that.

I still am not certain if Hughs little stout is a plushie or if its alive
Like he lost it in the snow and it had to get cleaned... plushie?
But it hangs onto him and moves... alive??
