Ok but the carrots thing

Listen I know Arima was putting what he thought his man wanted over his own health, and I get that it ended up worrying both the kid and the dad.

But does anyone else agree that Mitzuki absolutely should never have told Ayumo that eating his carrots would make his mom not sick???

The INSTANT bro said that shit, I was like oh no, I know parents do this and I know the kid is too young to understand much… but saying something like that gives a child the impression they are somehow RESPONSIBLE for their parents’ wellbeing! I could see right away how this could easily end up with Ayumo thinking any problems Arima has was his fault.

Kids have a hard time with some foods, and adults often try threats of some kind or other to get them to eat what they don’t like. Threats don’t work on three year olds - they’re too young to know how to behave to avoid the consequences. All it does it make them feel bad when they inevitably fail…

Telling a three year old that their sick parent’s health is dependent on that three year old’s behavior IS a threat. It wasn’t meant to be, but intention doesn’t change that.

In my opinion, that baby suffered because of the DAD more than the mom!! HE was the one who put it in the poor kid’s head that he had any control over his mom’s condition. Arima on the other hand consistently said that he would be ultimately okay even if he got sick sometimes. He never made it seem like he’ll only be okay depending on a baby’s actions…

So it kinda bothers me that the story frames it at the end like it’s exclusively on Arima when Ayumo sobs that it’s his fault mommy is sick. Much as Mitzuki is a good guy especially as far as manga seme’s go, in my mind, he’s the one who went and told a tiny child something that could only set him up for upset! I was hoping they’d all have a conversation or something, but instead Mitzuki used Ayumo’s breakdown to further press Arima to stop taking the experimental fertility medicine.

Don’t get me wrong, I do think Arima was so caught up in what he thought Mitzuki would want that he wasn’t listening to what Mitzuki outright said he wanted. And I think he was putting a significant burden on Mitzuki, when Mitzuki clearly was very upset by the effects of the drug, but was willing to go along with Arima’s wishes.

I just thought that whole carrots debacle was largely because of what Mitzuki went and said, but the narrative puts no responsibility on him for doing that, instead making it all on Arima for choosing to get sick — like imagine if it wasn’t a medicine he was choosing to take and it was happening naturally! Ayumo would still think it was his fault because he was told his actions would influence the outcome!!

I’m just saying, man… anyway otherwise very cute and mostly wholesome.
