it’s just so common for a yaoi to start this way it’s just numbing at this point but yes, a trigger would be the blackmail at the start.
yeah like it's wholly unnecessary but i think they just want to speed run the plot because usually they only get one volume and the editor forces them to cram all the stupid tropes and if they're lucky they will get more volumes.
honestly i usually try not to blame the authors because the industry is really annoying and the publishers and editors think that the audience is dumb; there was a japanese bl manga author that did a whole rant on how any time there is like more complicated plot they ask them to dumb it down and then mess up the pacing as well; here is the link if you wanna read

i didn’t realize that- when i read yaoi i end up ignoring a lot of the commen red flags for the enjoyment of the story. i read for funies. definitely not to use my brain power. while i don’t agree with everything i read, its so engrained into the genre i close my eyes and move on. thats why stories without those tropes end up standing out at the end of the day.
