They might excuse or even justify the sexual assault as a sign of passionate, obsessive love, or a "dark" but ultimately redeemable trait.
If the same character committed the same act but was portrayed as ugly, unkempt, or otherwise unappealing, it's highly unlikely the public opinion would be the same. The audience would be more likely to see the act for what it is: a violent crime. This same "pretty privilege" definitely creates a dangerous blind spot where people overlook the harm and focus on the perpetrator's attractiveness, which is a harmful extension of real-world "rape culture."
