Ok everyone seems to be assuming the worst of her characterization and, yeah i can see how and why its degrading. But I feel like this chapter kind of, maybe, might explain why???

Both our leads have become motivated (and pressured) by fear. I know we haven’t seen much on Satoko’s side, recently, but i dont think that expression she had when shinpei was trying to reassure her was anything plainly upset. Yes, she was upset, but in my eyes, it feels like she’s upset at her to have let things gone this far. Fear for the family she still cared about (and while it *is* kind if stupid for her to continue caring about the family, sometimes the time spent with your kin *can* make blood thicker than water), fear for herself if she tried to step in the fray to which she will likely get maimed entirely, and fear because she knows how much worse he’s getting, she can *see* how much worse.

Shinpei, clearly, is getting swallowed by his own mental state and fear. He’s scared that continuing to kill is what will tear him apart from Satoko, but he’s also aware that in their situation, and the best he could do, was to kill. It’s a conflicted guilt, and from it fear and obsession to keep close what he had. Past tense, had, because it’s now slowly coming to him that things have changed from their time on the island. Satoko is more upset, and there are more obstacles in the way. Fear of change in what he cherished.

This entire ramble might sound like im shilling the FUCK outta Oreco’s work— and to some extent, i am, i am a biased person who loves this manga and holds it so close to my heart—but i hope that my disjointed thoughts (and honestly, i can admit, copium. Bro im coping so hard i need them to be happy so bad im kms ) can offer a new perspective lol. Perspective of a hotayome TRUTHERRRRR I WILL DEFEND THIS MANGA TILL MY LAST BREATH

It's not that we don't love the story it's that we are trying our hardest to keep loving it. I don't think Satoko should go along with his killing; however, she isn't being fair. Everyone else around her is killing, maybe not w their own hands, but it's still happening and aimed at him. He's trying g to save her and she's vacillating between saving her family and Mitsuhara.
Shinpei is in front of her being attacked, half dead and she's yelling about the people trying to kill him if they are ok????
She's upset he's fighting back instead of staying prisoner or just letting them kill him???
She shouldn't have made promises to him she wasn't prepared to keep or loved him knowing what he is.

I think what the author is trying to show us, is Satoko's realization that her conviction isn't as strong as she believed it to be. She's talked big, about going to hell with Shinpei to be with him forever and whatnot but when faced with the actual reality and obstacles head-on, she realizes there's not much she can do and is in fact, scared. As much as she's convinced herself that she'll do anything to be with Shinpei and save her family, she's actually just a girl who's scared. It's almost like she's realizing that her conviction and dedication is not enough to change their situation. Kind of like, "I'm helpless - this is out of my hands" mindset. Satoko's strength and determination is what I love most about her, so it's painful to see her be hit with reality here. Alas, even if she feels weak and helpless, I hope she finds her courage again to stand her ground here and stand by her man. I don't expect her to fight, but since she has chosen Shinpei, I want to see her stand firm in her choice, and stand by him no matter how dangerous and at risk things may be.

I understand your argument, but we also have to remember she is dying and has felt like dying and giving up many times before. He made her want to live and be happy. She wasn't even dreaming of a happily ever after. She wanted to be happy with the time she had left and now it's basically throwing that out the way when he wasn't even the one to put himself in the position he's in. He is the only one she's holding yo any standard and not wanting to forgive when he's the only one trying to care. She's caring about everyone else when she has nothing to lose and nothing to gain by going along with them. Why wouldn't she fight with what she haa left for him??? As if no one else's sins are as bad as his?? It's all bs
