Clarifying some things!!

In all 3 of the timelines Kloff never loved Rapiel, and its implied that was the same for Rapiel.

The point that the author is making is that Aeroc and Kloff were fated to be together, but in the first timeline there were many obstacles that led to the tragedy. Both of them are more alike than they think and their haughty/hard headed attitudes led them to their downfalls.

Kloff does get punished in the timelines. In the first he has a ruined relationship with his children, nearly killed one, and is haunted by the cabin. Second timeline he gets nightmares from the first constantly, and his reputation does suffer. Third timeline he remembers everything but Aeroc doesnt.
The biggest punishment of all is that Kloff will never get to see the Aeroc he loved the most (1st) and cannot apologize to him, make up for it, or tell him he loves him.

As for Aeroc, you have to understand that he is very much in love with Kloff. I mean he was willing to at the least harm Rapiel because of his jealousy. He cant 'get over' Kloff. Also they're imprinted and it carries over in all timelines so no matter what he would fall in love with Kloff. Consider this 2nd timeline as a win for Aeroc even though its fucked up. He gets to have a do-over. He still believes he's at fault for everything so this timeline he is willing to accept Kloffs affection because he believes he's mostly atoned for his sins.

I like to say that there are 6 main characters in this story. Every timeline version of Aeroc and Kloff. Once you see it that way the story will be more enjoyable I guess.

I don’t think he believes he’s atoned for his sins. Remember in the novel, when he asks Kloff if he’s allowed to love him now, even after they got together? He feels he doesn’t deserve to love Kloff because of what he’s done. What I think is that he’ll carry the guilt forever, but he’s able to live with it.

Also, we know it was Aeroc, not Rapiel, that Kloff had always wanted. But why is it that in the cabin (first TL), Kloff looked at Aeroc and thought of Rapiel, smiling at him so affectionately?

I already know all the spoilers but damn, Kloff is such a hard to love character. I love your take that there are 6 characters here. Thinking about it in that perspective comforts me a bit.

Yeah rather than atone, acceptance is a better word. But I felt that he did get a lot of weight off his shoulders since his main shames of killing rapiel and destroying the teiwind legacy did not occur.

for your question, Kloff has a warped identity crisis for Aeroc and Rapiel. Basically he sees Rapiel in Aeroc because he sees Aeroc in Rapiel. While Rapiel is his own person, Kloff didn't see him that way. Since AlphaxAlpha relationships were heavily frowned upon he replaced Aeroc with a Omega version of him. Its a common trope in bl or gl that a character will date a genderbent version of their unrequited love because there's less social stigma and its (in their minds) the closest they can get to being with their love.

I mean, the method of revenge Kloff used was in no way just for Rapiel. He could've had Aeroc raped and killed as an alpha like Rapiel. He could've stopped at him 'replacing' one child. Kloff is a very rigid and close minded

ok to continue my bad, Kloff is rigid and close minded. The only reason why he has any attraction to Aeroc that he actually acts on on the 2nd timeline is due to the imprinting, the dreams he has of the 1st timeline, and the fact that Aeroc is still an Omega. Kloff would rather do all this than love Aeroc as an Alpha because of his strict morals. His notions of how to get the success he wants is to marry an omega and there is no space for nuance.
