I’m still not done reading it yet but I agree with youuu. I don’t like how Tay allows Ilay to do those things with him when he knows Xinlu hates Ilay. I’m in ch 53, in ch 52 Xinlu, Tay and Ilay were having some convo and it’s so clear that Xinlu feels threatened by Ilay’s presence in Tay’s life. Xinlu wants Tay to quit because of Ilay for god’s sake, that should tell something. But in ch 53, Ilay and Tay get’s on with masturbating. Like wadafak Tay. It’s like Tay is cheating on Xinlu, it’s hard to read.
If Xinlu was the male lead, it would be so wrong yk.

My point exactly! How do you obsess over a man, actively seek him out, and build a romantic relationship with him, only to dump him because you don’t wanna give him your booty? And the excuse? Total BS. “I don’t bottom” and “I don’t like that Xinlu is possessive”—okay, sure. But then you turn around and get with Ilay, who does all of that on steroids. This pairing feels so forced. I hate it. (╯°Д °)╯╧╧

Okay but… as a novel reader, you gotta understand Taeui first.
He’s been compared to his genius twin his whole life
ever since Taeui was a kid, Everyone around him always wanted something from him just because of his twin’s talent.
Because of that, he has lower self-esteem and his mental health isn’t great. He thinks he’s just “normal,” but actually no — if you really analyse his character, you can see it.
And Ilay? He’s the first person who never wanted anything from Taeui.
Why? Because Ilay already has everything — wealthy, lucky, strong, intelligent. That’s why Taeui has a soft spot for Ilay Riegrow.even if Ilay’s hot-and-cold and a jerk sometimes
Yeah, you’re not wrong — Ilay is asshole till the end of book 1 .His character development isn’t huge all at once, but it takes many years to make him less inhuman (thanks to Taeui).
And for Xinlu… at first, he wanted Taeui because of luck (Gil-sancheon). But then eventually, Xinlu started to fall in love with Taeui — until Ilay came and snatched Taeui away from him.
(Lil bit spoiler here if you don't mind)
Xinlu’s hate for Ilay is bigger than his love for Taeui. In the end, he just wanted to take Taeui from Ilay so Ilay would suffer from losing him. And yes, he really did make that happen.
I recommend you to read the novel but if you don't want it's okay because passion book 1 it's really messy and their character development ( ilay&taeui) start book 2 (diaphonic symphonia)

tbh your opinion is very valid and I kinda agree with some of your thoughts (and this is coming from someone who likes Ilay, who adores Iltae’s dynamic and a fan of the novels). Ilay’s ‘character development’ in PASSION is still gradual since you need to see first how unhinged, obsessed and toxic he is, and he actually serves as a toxic ML in my opinion (so ppl hating on him in PASSION is very understandable). But he is so much better in 2nd esp in the 3rd book.
Tae is also an unreliable narrator and kind of confusing. Hes more heavily attracted to Ilay than he was with Xinlu even from the start. Tae was smitten towards Xinlu at first bc he claimed Xinlu was his ideal type (Tae was a popular ‘top’ in Korea’s gay community prior to UNDHRO and Xinlu looked like this cute submissive type he usually dated so he was disappointed that Xinlu wanted to top him, then hes starting to realise that Xinlu seems to be a sheep in a wolf’s clothing). Then Ilay is the domineering type & Tae couldnt possibly top him (so thats why he said that Ilay is not his ideal type) but hes pretty much kinda attracted to him physically (except for Ilay’s dck which he hated so much) so I think thats why he let Ilay sleep with him. These three really did have a messy relationships (reason why I also dropped reading PASSION the first time, the love triangle thing was really messy and infuriating) so i kinda just skipped their arc lol.
Reading the novels would make you understand their dynamic and characters much better though I admit that in passion, it’s still pretty much very toxic, thats why it’s also my least fave book in passionverse

The fact that Tay has to constantly “fix” Ilay is exhausting. Ilay’s personality is awful for no reason, which makes the entire story feel weak. There’s no traumatic incident or rough upbringing to explain why he’s such a jerk—he’s just badly written.
The characters’ actions are inconsistent, and the plot is full of holes. Someone even admitted to skipping the whole messy love triangle and relationship development because it was frustrating and unbearable. And honestly? If parts of the story are so messy that readers skip them, that’s a huge problem.
Then there’s the whole dungeon/detention thing. You know, where they throw him after he kills multiple people? How can someone get away with that? It doesn’t matter how “special” you are, it’s completely unrealistic and just ridiculous.
And the “good luck charm” subplot? Totally pointless. It pops up out of nowhere and adds nothing to the story.
Honestly, this series is currently over 100 chapters long and should be way more fleshed out than it is. People are only sticking around for the nice art and hot characters. For what should be a substantial story, this is utterly disappointing. I can go on and on.
Tell me why I spent an entire day reading this from start to finish. Okay, so… here are my thoughts:
Their relationship is a heaping pile of doo-doo on fire. I’ve read hundreds of BL with batshit crazy men, but GURL… Ilay is absolutely mental. His attitude was hot and cold from day one, and his so-called “character development” sucked. In other series, you at least see the crazy characters gradually become better people. But Ilay? He literally treated him poorly the entire time, then suddenly apologizes once (bare minimum, mind you) and we’re supposed to believe it’s all sunshine and rainbows? Please.
Xinlu was batshit too, but at least he treated our MC well in comparison. He had that “sweet only to me” energy, and honestly? I’ll take that over whatever Ilay’s got going on.
And listen, Ilay is hot—don’t get me wrong—but he’s still an ass. He literally stole this man from under Xinlu. But then Tay… oh, Tay. He played himself. First, it’s all “no way in hell I’m bottoming” and then suddenly, “Well… if it’s Ilay, I guess.” Like, WHAT? Ilay is ten times more unhinged and you’re just like, “Yeah, that checks out. Let me hand him my booty on a silver platter.” Sir… you’re contradicting everything you stood for.
