some people really are that oblivious to those around them when they’re set on a certain idea (like how they were besties for life in this case). not necessarily because he’s opposed to something romantic or anything but he just didn’t even think to think of it. but imo he’s genuinely questioning the base of their friendship, their dynamic throughout the years and what might happen to them in the future rn which is why he said “if we’re not lovers does our relationship really no longer hold any meaning to you”
