Rio is a brat for sure. Maybe it's because he is still a kid (it was repeated many times that he is a minor). It's icky that Asahina is an adult and still slept with Rio, but I know age of consent is way lower in Japan and minors dating adults isn't stigmatized. But I guess the story had its flaw because Rio is a kid. He is childish and immature. The love story didn't feel like it was fleshed out. I can understand that Asahina was attracted to Rio since the start because of his looks but I don't see where the love is. It is just so shallow. They have barely known each other. Not only that, Rio only loves Asahina because Asahina likes him. There just isn't depth to their story. I feel like there could have been more pining and angst and actual development of love.
I had high hopes for this because I grew up over the years reading this story, so watching the grownup Rio find his own love would have been great. But I think they truly could have fleshed out Rio and his first love and how he is hung up on Shingo, but he can't do anything about it because Shingo is dating Keiji. Even with Asahina being a replacement or whanot, there could have been more done with it. I know Rio has his own insecurities and traumas about not being anyone's number one, but I really wanted to see him get told off by Yujin. Yujin loves Rio so much and Rio had the audacity to yell at him, but Yujin didn't say anything. I also don't like how they left that as it is. I wanted a confrontation scene and Rio giving his blessings to Yujin can live happily with Ei.
