Actually no that's kinda just how story telling works. Bad (morally) characters don't exist in a void. Without an explanation there's less punch to their actions. I don't think this is his redemption quite yet..

“I’ll never become like you dad!” becomes exactly like dad. crazy how the author is trying to make us sympathize with him after all the stuff he’s done LOL
