I think a big part plays on how he was raised. I dont think hes particularly emphatic enough to read a room especially of one he has never experienced. I do kinda feel that he thinks she is necessary, interesting and all these nice adjectives but i dont think it goes past like for now. I'mma be honest, as someone with autism I've always thought Richard was just autistic.
In that balcony scene where he was happy and he was like "..?" I interpreted that as him being confused as to how something that has been so miniscule for him could affect her so much, not him being annoyed, just confused.
Him only focusing on sexual things I perceived as him only knowing for sure that they have that shared interest, and he wants both for them to be happy. We can see in this chapter alone that he does want her to be happy outside of the bedroom too by him asking if she wants to go to the festival simply because his aide said that she would like it.
This was just my interpretation of course, I could be wrong.
I think a small part to it is he saw her genuinely happy in that moment and got jealous HE didnt cause it, I do think he loves and prioritizes her as a person, but because SHE is the only thing that matters to him, he cant comprehend how she can care about things outside of him/herself (aka her thrist for power)

As someone who lacks empathy and has a high sexual drive, that's how I perceived their relationship. Anytime someone shows interest in something outside of what I like or show emotions. I don't necessarily look like him but I just stand there like a doll cause I don't know what to do. So to him this is the most natural thing ever to the point of insignificance; so seeing Courtney burst down in tears about something that doesn’t matter in his eyes, he’s confused, not disgusted. He doesn’t understand what could be so moving in that moment for her to react in such a way. He likes Courtney. Ok this is my opinion but I don't think he actually likes her.
