In a few chapters later, after some problems with Courtney's family, Richard and Courtney go to the Devon house to see Edward... Richard realizes that Courtney has a sensitive, loving and tender side. He sees it and although at first he feels confused, he begins to want Courtney to treat him the same as Edward. Richard begins to understand Courtney more... Some problems will come between them too but throughout the story it is clear that Richard wants, and is attracted to all facets of Courtney.

We need to understand Richard a little more. He's a boy who was practically forgotten by his father and is simply the next emperor in line. For him, Courtney is his mistress, and he wants to feel in control from her, so seeing her angry, explosive, and furious is something he considers "normal." Seeing her express other emotions leaves him a little confused. Wait until you get to the episode where Richard sees Courtney spending time with his nephew (Edward) so you can understand a little better.
