Here's my theory on why Ellison might have killed his unit (if he even did if it wasn't a misunderstanding)
Perhaps, in the midst of war, he caught them all committing some sort of henious war crime and decided that they'd be better off dead. Clearly he's not evil nor do I think he lost control of himself for a split second. But maybe by his 'earth' standards, they'd done something unspeakable or just standards in general.
