Had the same thought. But based on the context, this must be during their 20s. Cuz the sequel suggests that they were in their 30s, also when Inui called Tatsumi by his last name, and he says "that's nostalgic..."
volume 2 is based on their university days, i believe. the end of volume one shows them in their late 30s.
