Ending

My thoughts on the ending and all the foreshadowing:

I think the story will end with Hikaru sacrificing himself rather than merging with Yoshiki. Everything we’ve seen the “mixing” warnings, the Monkey’s Paw foreshadow about wishes backfiring, Hikaru nearly taking Yoshiki’s soul after being wished back, and the headless woman appearing in that moment all kind of point to it to it. To me, the headless woman isn’t just a random impurity but a clear example of what happens when a human and an impurity actually mix, you don’t get a person, you get something broken and incomplete, merging would cause Yoshki to become that soulless monster. The only think keeping Hikaru giving in to his nature tame is Hikaru’s soul. Hikaru’s true nature keeps pulling him toward Yoshiki’s soul, but as this monster had taken Hikaru’s form he learns humanity and his love for Yoshiki is making him resist. At the last hole, he’ll probably start to mix with Yoshiki, becoming the ldemon king” and Yoshiki will let him, but Hikaru will stop, realizing that turning Yoshiki into another impurity like the headless woman would be the ultimate betrayal of his true feelings. Instead, he’ll give himself up, vanish, return to the Other Side, or be sealed, so Yoshiki can remain human. Yoshiki will survive but be marked by the experience, carrying traces of Hikaru while finally being forced to grieve for real. The story ends not in union but in sacrifice, with Hikaru proving his love by choosing Yoshiki’s soul over his own existence.
