SPOILER!!! Heard great things about Gantz so I finally decided to read and sheesh I have a lot to say about this but here are MY* 4 main points:
1. The women and young high school girls are over-sexualized. EVERY single female character had no depth and always had a love interest. Reika is the best example of this- she’s a popular celebrity that every man knew. Men always acted like dogs in heat around her to the point of wanting to rape her in multiple occasions. I wish I were exaggerating but even the male ALIENS tried to rape her. 2. Sexual assault/rape. SA was shown multiple times and in the same ROOM (The Gantz room). It happened so much that it wasn’t even shock value anymore… it felt like a fetish. Female aliens were raped by humans and were killed (two of the aliens looked humanlike). I remember this happening at least 3x throughout the story. 3. I hated the MC, Kei Kurano in the beginning because of how he treated Kei Kishimoto. He was basically driven by lust. I tried to understand where he was coming from being a teenage boy and all but when the author includes sa/rape throughout the story, it just doesn’t work. Kurano imagined taking advantage of Kishimoto and even said that he would. When he couldn’t get what he wanted (sex) he kicked her out. He had that whole “I feed and house you so you owe me sex” mentality. At some point there were 2 of her. Her original self died and MC went after the other version in order to get what he wanted which was a relationship (sex). Yes, he had character development when it came to being brave, strong and helping others but that’s it. I’m surprised he even fell in love with his gf Tae..i’m hoping that’s not part of the development? Maybe it is, it still sucks. 4. Lastly, the plot holes and very RUSHED ending. Not sure why people love this so much. Maybe it’s because of the interesting fight scenes, the wildly cool alien designs and naked girls 25/8. The art is cool though definitely could see improvement throughout the story but it doesn’t save it tbh.
