SPOILER!!! Heard great things about Gantz so I finally decided to read and sheesh I have a lot to say about this but here are MY* main points:
1. The women and teens are over-sexualized. Every single female character had no depth and always had a love interest. Reika is the best example of this- she’s a popular celebrity that every man knew. Men always acted like dogs in heat around her to the point of wanting to rape her in multiple occasions. I wish I were exaggerating but even the male ALIENS tried to rape her. 2. Sexual assault/rape. SA was shown multiple times and in the same ROOM (The Gantz room). It happened so much that it wasn’t even shock value anymore… it felt like a fetish. Female aliens were raped by humans and were killed (one of the aliens looked humanlike). I remember this happening at least 3x throughout the story. 3. A few things I can’t get over is the apparent lack of interest of mass killings happening all over Japan. Literally the only thing the public would say was “is this a movie” like hey it was funny the first time like i get it people can be ignorant to what’s going on around them but come on… every time? If you see a big ass monster crashing out on those around you would you think it was a movie set? This excuse got annoying after the first 20x it was said. 4. I hated Kei Kurano in the beginning because of how he treated Kei Kishimoto and basically was driven by lust. I tried to understand where he was coming from being a teenage boy and all but when the author includes sa/rape throughout the story as well it just doesn’t work. Kurano imagined taking advantage of Kishimoto and even said that he would. When he couldn’t get what he wanted (sex) he kicked her out. He had that whole “I feed and house you so you owe me sex” mentality. Yes he had character development when it came to being brave and helping others but that’s it. I’m surprised he even fell in love with Tae..i’m hoping that’s not part of the development? maybe it is, it still sucks. 5. Lastly, the plot holes and rushed ending. Not sure why people love this so much. Maybe it’s because of the interesting fight scenes, the wildly cool alien designs and naked girls 25/8. The art is cool though definitely could see improvement throughout the story but it doesn’t save it tbh.
