I wish the author had made Asil an average student at best. I just don't believe that he's a strategic and military genius. The author claiming he's so smart and so good when he never seems to have a plan or think about anything at all makes the overall story less enjoyable.

Characters should be consistent. Characters don't have to be the smartest and the best, they don't have to be the most beautiful, they don't have to make good decisions. In fact character should be flawed. They just have to be consistent.

If you say a character is the top of their class and amazing at military strategy, destined to be a leader in the military due to their genius etc etc then you need to make them act like that consistently throughout the story. Asil has consistently demonstrated that he is impulsive, doesn't plan anything, has a terrible temper, never thinks about his actions or their consequences, and couldn't strategize his way out of a wet paper box... But we're supposed to believe he was the top of his class in the best military academy in the country? I don't believe it.

I would like him better if he was just an average student and then everything happened to him because that would be very consistent.
