the only time we were in the real present is the first scene of chapter 1. the rest has been either the past past (when they were teenagers) or the recent past (as adults, basically when the ml has his light hair). to guess which is which you really just need to pay attention at how old the chars look + if it makes sense for it to be in the teenagers past or the adults one.
