Idk man he did make the craziest choice but at the same time he thought that Derek would stay with him forever and Derek was his world but at risk of leaving him so like he said he made a stupid decision because id like to think he wasn't educated on how human morality works thus being so reliant and attached as he was (is?) to Derek and probably spent his time festering in regret.
