Not excusing him but think about it in his POV. He never met his mom and all his life, he's just a "crown prince" and "remnant of the dead queen."
Pretty sure he's been told many times that he could have been easily replaced if not her dead mom or something.
I agree. I believe he isn't seen as "Richard" he's just seen as "the crown prince" or "the child that killed the beloved queen" his father didn't seem like he was very present in Richard's life after the queen died also (I'm assuming) especially when Richard misbehaved.
From that one scene in his flashback?? Definitely.
