I get that it's difficult for you to approach him but girl, you know his niece, she would have been more than happy to set something up between you two (although that would have been an ambush and that's a red flag, but here he wants to know too) and you could have apologized and explained. I really hope they don't do that thing where fl is in the wrong but ml ends up apologizing and begging for her back.
