Yeah, this gotta be about smth more than a hungry coyote, cause literally what could have stopped Todd from eating the lamb after Dennis leaves (no one comes to take over, the owner resides in the town so literally no one was watching those sheep, they weren't locked, there was no point in getting close with Dennis, the owner also makes no sense, so if Dennis didn't trust Todd then he wouldn't have eaten the sheep?) So this is definitely all a metaphor.
